There are a lot of monuments that we can admire going on a few days trip to Rome. Once in a lifetime even a short travel to Rome is obligatory.

If you have never been in the Eternal City, the advice is absolutely to start booking a room in one Rome hotel, so to be able to admire with your own eyes so many architectural beauties to leave breathless. In this section we will talk about the seven hills of Rome, one of the characteristics and one of the most famous tradition of this wonderful city.

According to the tradition, Rome was built on seven hills, all located East of the River Tiber. These seven hills would represent so the heart of the city. The seven hill are the Aventine, the Capitoline, the Caelian, the Esquiline, the Palatine, the Quirinal and the Viminal hill. These hills did have a very important role on the ancient roman mythology, religion and politics.
According to the tradition, Roma was founded by Romulus on the Palatine hill. In fact, right on the top and on the foot of this hill several finds have been found, these finds could be dated back to the age of the first urban settlements. This finds can be also easily admired at the Palatine hill museum, for whoever wants to sleep in Rome for some days.

The Palatine hill area turned out to be inhabited since the I millennium B.C. At the beginning there was just a small village, all surrounded by wetlands. This first urban agglomerate stayed almost unchanged for a couple of centuries, it was the so-called “Roma Quadrata” (Rome square), because of the roughly rhomboid shape of the top of the hill it was located on. The expansion, in the VIII century A.D, of the original unit and the fusion with some tribes located nearby originated that city on the seven hills, however they were not the traditionally known seven hills, but just some minor heights, that are the two of Palatine hill, the Caelian and the Velian, and the three Esquiline west heights.

Only from the IV century A.D., thanks to the building of the walls, built under the reign of king Servius Tullius, an expanded city was enclosed, that contained also the other hills, that means the traditional seven hills.

Seven is a recurrent number in the ancient roman mythology. The Latin terms Septimontium (that means seven hills) was used by the ancient Romans to celebrate a religious festival in the area of the seven hills, that would be exactly the area of Rome. From the ancient time, this special festival, related to the seven hills, was created, it seems, by Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome after Romulus. This festival in practice was a long procession along the seven hills with sacrifices to celebrate the 27 Argei’s sepulchers, that were on those hills. According to the tradition, the Argei were the heroic Greek princes who, arrived in Lazio following Hercules, would have conquered the hills on which Rome would have been built from the Sicels and the Liguri populations.

These are just some of the stories and legends you could live fist hand, if you will decide to spend a few days in some nice Rome apartments. Rome is a wonderful city, at every step you could find some incredible monuments and some past traces. Histories and legends on this Eternal City are countless, from its foundation up to our days, Rome has always been a magic city, in which everything can happen.

Autumn Weather in Rome

Without fail, Romans recommend that the best time to travel to Rome is from mid-September to October. Yes, it might rain, but the temperatures turn out to be quite nice, even if it is getting a tiny bit chilly at night. Almost no one recommends November, but I’ve had very good luck the last few years with weather in the first half of November.

Spring Weather in Rome

May has almost the same temperatures as October, and April, while you’re likely to feel chilly at night, is almost as good.

The effects upon tourism and the tourist industry could be numerous, though I will only mention a couple. Many people complain about hotel and apartment rates increasing, not only during the summer months, but throughout the whole year. And quite right I say, when there are 300 rooms with air-conditioning systems set to -5 degrees Celsius all day, (whilst the guests themselves are stripping off beside the pool trying to soak up every last heat ray that the sun exudes). Add to that, the fact that the hotter countries, including Italy, often experience troubles such as water shortages during the summer months. One cannot travel more than 20-30 kilometers outside of the center of Rome, without spotting a water tower; ready and waiting for such emergencies.

Then again, as a frequent traveller myself, I have to admit that I am amongst those who whinge about the cost of holidays and the annoying chamber maid that turned off my air-con again. I also complain after 3 days of staying in an air-conditioned room that my asthma is playing up and find myself, throughout the remainder of my holiday, popping anti-histamine tablets and taking my inhalers to counter the side-effects of my “cutting-my-nose-off-to-spite-my-own-face” overindulgence. (But that’s part of being on holiday is it not?) I am of course trying my best to play devils advocate. But, again in favour of hotels, the hotter the weather, the more washing of sheets and towels the hotels are required to do as people sweat and consequentially shower/bathe more, (affecting the volume of water).

As far as the industry its self is concerned, yes; people do flock in their thousands, from the colder parts of the world to the heat, as soon as the summer months arrive, BUT, when you feel like the core of your body has turned into volcanic lava, are you really going to want a 10oz Sirloin Steak and all the trimmings for your dinner; or (to use Italy as an example) a 4-5 course dinner of starter, pasta dish, meat dish, dessert and coffee/spirit? I know that I personally lose 90% of my appetite for large and hot meals in the heat. Then again I do drink more, so do the restaurants and bars rely on this to make their money?

For residents, the temperatures can cause several problems. People taking time of work due to problems such as heat/sun stroke, problems with dehydration or people generally taking days off to go to the beach. Add to that, everything in Italy slows down. The Italians are well-known for being “laid-back” and “easy with time”, but the truth is that in the summer months, it’s hard to get anything done. I know that I personally find it difficult to move some days without finding myself “glowing”. Older people in Italy are told to visit supermarkets and shopping centers to help them cool down. Last year I found myself looking forward to going to a well-known Italian meat supermarket, simply because the entire store is a freezer. The only problem was, I’d feel sick as soon as I stepped outdoors, as it was like jumping from Scotland to Italy. The heat, after the extreme cool, was thick and choking. Driving your car can be a nightmare, anywhere from not being able to plug in your seat belt or touch the steering wheel because they have been heated to melting point; to getting stuck in hot, sticky, airless traffic jams. Weeds and bushes on the sides of the road have been known to set on fire, by a combination of the sun drying them out and the heat from the tarred roads setting them alight. Occasionally there are problems with power-outages in homes and shops, because the generators, wires or transition boxes have overheated. Or how do you feel about brushing your teeth in hot water? The pros of course… if like me you are to tight-pursed that you refuse to fork out for air-conditioning, your power bill in the summer months can decrease to almost nothing in Italy. Unlike the old cold summers I used to endure when I lived in Scotland, there’s no need to have your water heater on all day to take a shower or wash the dishes. No need for heating or lights on all day thanks to the light and heat of the sun. And finally, my personal favourites, you can put away your winter duvet at nights and enjoy the reduced quantity of laundry, thanks to the fact you wear less clothes and used less bed linen.

Now in 2007. This year, June was HOT. Very hot. By far, warmer than last year, but it followed a very wet April and May. July has been up and down. I am lucky to live north of Italy in the mountains where we get some breeze; but on a trip to the south of Rome (where I used to live also), to visit friends a few weeks ago, I realised just how lucky I really am. The change in temperature from the north to the south was uncanny. There was literally a 5-10 degree drop that day between my home in the north and my friends in the south. More shocking to me, was the change in air. Being situated in the countryside here in the north, higher up and surrounded by fields and trees etc. our air is fresh and soft on the nose and throat (terrible for any one with Hay-fever, but none the less a good clean air. In the south however; my friends live in a reasonably built up area, even the countryside full of houses and small repair garages and abandoned buildings. The air is thick, smoggy and hot. My father, on a trip to visit, once described it as holding a hair dryer in front of your face and I cannot think of a better explanation.

I cannot determine whether the increase in the temperature within Italy, or the effects; are caused by Global warming, or if we are quite simply receiving a freak weather change; but as an expat in Rome, I can say that the weather change is certainly noticeable. As for the effects, well I could be right I could be wrong, I cannot know, but I would like to hope that tourism and peoples desires to visit hotter countries such as Italy will not be affected too much, as Italy is a truly beautiful country to visit and with so much to enjoy and such easy access to low cost flights and airports and with the ease of self-booking thanks to teletext and the Internet; it would be a shame for the weather to spoil it all.

Rome is a city which is famous for its historical importance and charm. The city is among the best tourist destinations of the world and houses some world class hotels in both, luxury hotels and budget hotel category.

Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world tourism map. Rome is a big city of Europe. Most of the main attractions of the city are situated at Central Rome. These attractions are too close to each other, so a fit person can travel to these attractions by himself without indulging on any kind of expenses on traveling.

In Rome, the new developed area is very well connected by the public transport, while on the other hand the older part of the city is not frequently attached with transport means. So you have to decide that whether you want your hotel to be near transport for day trips outside the city? Or do you want to wander back to your palazzo along tiny medieval streets?

The hotels are relatively expensive for accommodation and heavily booked. If you want a best Rome discount hotel in good prices, booking a room in advance will be a good idea. There are various good Rome budget hotels available within a city. You just need to find a best one for you. The area surrounded by the Centro Storico, Colosseum and Roman forum houses many well managed cheap hotels.

Rome has a variety of hotels, from budget hotel category to some most luxurious Five Star hotels in Europe. No doubt these luxury hotels are so expensive but Rome also houses some decent Rome budget hotels that offer reasonable service for a price you pay. These Rome discount hotels offer all basic facilities like well decorated spacious rooms with all elementary amenities, complimentary breakfast and some other additional facilities. These hotel charges around 65 euro to 150 euro per night for a double room, depending on the season. Giglio Dell’ Opera, Rome, Giotto Hotel, Rome, Hotel Executive, Hotel Diplomat, Hotel Priscilla, Hotel Rouge Et Noir, City Guest House and Ciampino are some well known budget hotels in Rome.

These Rome hotels can easily be booked by the official website of the hotels or by any other good hotel or travel websites.

Rome has much to offer to all travellers, whether you’re seeking archaeological wonders, amazing shopping deals, or a romantic adventure.

Depending on your itinerary decide on the best area of Rome to book your accommodation. After all, you certainly don’t want to be trekking around town all day and then have to travel for an hour to get back to the Hotel. We suggest you to stay in a Hotel in Rome City Centre

To avoid disappointment be sure to book your hotel in Rome well in advance since they can be expensive and choices can be limited if you leave it to the last minute.

The Colosseum and Roman Forum are usually high on the itinerary list for travellers to Rome. The underground metro station and the Stazione Termini are located nearby making it easier to travel from other parts of the city. Book a Hotel near Termini Station can be convenient for those who wish to explore the area over just a few days.

Romantics should visit the Historic Centre of the city, which was once used for military exercises by ancient Romains. It features numerous winding medieval streets, piazzas, and fountains. The area also hosts many restaurants and bars. Piazza Navona and Campo dei’ Fiori tend to be busy areas that are generally filled with tourists and locals and are worth a visit however other streets are more laid back with less activity. The charm of the area makes it a strong favourite among lovers of all ages. The ancient Via del Corso is often compared to London’s Oxford Street and is a shopaholic’s dream. From there up to the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna shoppers will find an eclectic, cosmopolitan atmosphere among the narrow streets, charming cafes, and exclusive boutiques. In the vicinity of the Spanish Steps you’ll find the park of the Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, Fontana di Trevi, and Via Margutta, which is a splendid artist’s lane.

Certainly we can not forget all those who come to Rome to visit the Vatican City. We have the very best selection of accommodation near the Vatican City.

WE WISH YOU A LOVELY STAY IN ROME!

One of the sites anyone traveling to Rome should consider seeing is the Rome Water Fountains; many abound throughout the city, intriguing many who visit this popular travel location with their beauty and charm, elegance and history.

You, too, would be wise, when setting your site-seeing agenda, to consider adding Rome Water Fountains to your list of “must-sees” while you visit. There are so many, you may find it difficult to decide which of these lovely fountains to include on your trip. A city guide to the water fountains of Rome can be found at http://www.romewaterfountains.com/. This guide will help you determine which fountains to add to your list, which ones you will find most interesting, beautiful, and worthy of a visit.

Out of the many from which you are able to choose, several will surely catch your eye and enhance the likelihood of your taking a second look. To name merely a few, there are the St. Peters Square fountain, the Fountain of the Tortoises, and the Fountain of Tureen.

The fountain located in St. Peters Square can be found in front of St. Peters Basilica, which is located in Vatican City. This fountain was previously known as Pope Innocent’s Fountain. A well-known writer of the15th and 16th centuries, Buckard, noted that, in 1490, Pope Innocent VII had built a splendid water fountain at one end of St. Peters Square. This fountain is a must-see when traveling to the city of Rome.

Another fountain that many believe to be of exquisite design and a truly elegant water feature is the Fontana delle Tartarughe, or the Tortoise Fountain. This fountain was designed by Geocomo della Porta in the late 1500s, but tortoises were added by Bernini for Pope Alexander VII in 1658.

A third fountain many find worthy of taking a look is The Fountain of Tureen. This fountain has tiny letters carved beneath a knob at the top of its lid that recite a proverbial and philosophical statement: “Love God without fail. Do good and let others do the talking. MDCXXII.” It is dated 1622.

All these and many other fantastic fountains can be found by visiting a city guide to the water fountains of Rome at http://www.romewaterfountains.com/.

Rome in Italy is both known to have two sides of the coin as its facade because the city has both American and European cultures. Rome is considered to be one of the best and famous historical cities known around the globe. Amongst its neighbors, it is also one of the most unique in all of Europe. Rome cannot be visited and toured all in one day because it has so much to offer for the holidaymaker.

Rome’s main attraction is the Coliseum, but one of the most overlooked parts of the trip is trying to survive each time you cross the road. Cars and small motorcycle will never stop for you; you will just have to know proper timing and technique while crossing the bricked streets of the city.

Coffee shops are one of the thriving businesses in Rome. This is due to their great brews that stay unique and fresh unlike those American, London, French and Seattle coffee chains that all taste the same. Always look for Roman coffee while in Rome.

Obvious travel itinerary for your Rome visit is the Coliseum, Pantheon, Vatican City and the national monument along with its ruins. Film is a thriving art in Rome, too. Many artists do filming here so expect a busy film crew anywhere in the streets. Also Opera houses and performances are very abundant everywhere, so be sure to purchase your tickets a day ahead to save yourself of the burdens of lining up for tickets.

Rome Accommodations – Where to Bargain and Get it Cheap

Rome is by no means a cheap city to travel in. It is overly expensive, and this may be due to the increasing value of the Euro. If you plan properly and use the best common sense, then you will not have to put holes in your pockets if you travel in Rome.

You can save greatly on hotels when you go and visit the “Termini Station”. It is the main train station in all Italy and it connects everything in the vast networks of train. From there you will be called out by barkers and representatives of each hotel trying to lure you with brochures, leaflets and palm lets into their hotels. Always try to bid and never forget to say “no thanks” many times before you end up agreeing with EUR50-EUR100 a night on average. If you are looking for accommodation in Rome for the same day, this is the place for you.

However, to keep things as positive as it could be, hotels in Italy are for everyone what ever your budget maybe. If you have limited amounts of cash, feel free to try out “Hotel Ottoviano” in Rome, it is a small hostel situated in the Vatican and is in the heart of markets, restaurants and shopping center. If you are into those luxurious types, you can always find the best places for four and five star accommodation hotels right near the central train station.

Whenever you are in Europe or in Rome for that matter, always carry extra money with you. You will soon find out that you just cannot finish everything you want to accomplish in a day in this wonderful and splendid city.

One of the most beautiful cities on earth is that of Rome. It is home to hundreds of tourist spots that can keep a person on the go for days on end. Not only are the ancient ruins of Rome amazing to see, but Rome is also home to Vatican City which can keep a person occupied for at least a couple of days.

Roman tourism is big business, and Romans like to cater to their public who visit everyday of the year. The streets are lined with bistros that serve the food of the gods and while sitting out in the sun, you can take in one of the hundreds of fountains that have been around for generations.

Travel in Rome is another easy thing to come by when you are a tourist. You can do the easy way of using a taxi or one of their many trains lead you where you need to go, or you can take matters into your own hands and rent one of the famous scooters that zip in and out of traffic all over this ancient capital of the world.

You can also find accommodations in Rome just as plentiful as the espresso. Hotels and small inns dot the landscape and provide comfort when you are away from home. Many are reasonably priced, and they usually offer help in trying to decide what are the best things to see and do in their country if your time is limited to a small stay.

No matter what you do in your life, one place that you definitely do not want to miss out on is Rome. This is the capital of the beautiful country of Italy, and they welcome their guests with the open arms of the gods.

There is probably no other capital city which is so great and at the same time so small. If you are visiting Rome for the first time, go out on a sunny morning and you can go on foot anywhere in the city center. No map is really needed, possibly a guide in your pocket.

No matter which direction you go, you will pretty soon end up in a square, in front of a church or a palace and be amazed. Your gaze meets the Church of St Peter, the Forum Romanum, the Capitol, the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Colosseum and Fontana di Trevi. All of these are major sights which remain great milestones in human history. The rest – the local trattorias, the best cappuccino, the good ice cream, colorful markets, and even football – is a pure love story of the kind that last a lifetime.

The city of Rome is over two thousand seven hundred sixty years old. That is if you choose to believe the old legend that tells that the city was founded on April twenty first in the year seven hundred and fifty three BC, when Romulus on the Palatine drew up the first city, roma quad rata, while he murdered his twin brother Remus. Since then, many different people have come and gone. The Etruscans have disappeared and the Roman Empire was passed over. The eternal city of Rome has been ruled by kings, emperors and popes.

Today Rome is a capital of a republic led by a president, trying to appear as a modern European country with the functioning of social security, pensions and medical care as well as having a regulated traffic. Somewhat behind most of the other European Union member states, however, one must say. The ancient is never far away even in the modern city. The city’s seven hills (Palatine, the Capitol, Esquilinen, Quirinale, Viminale, Aventinen and Celio) are still clearly seen in the city. The municipality of Rome is wide – farther so than even Paris – and also includes the ancient port city of Ostia, which during the summer is a popular seaside resort. The base for the city’s road network is an antique construction. The road exits still carry the same names as they did two thousand years ago: Flaminia, Cassia, Prenestina, Salaria and Appia.

In contrast to all the antiques a visit to Mussolini exhibition city EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma) is recommended, the construction of which was finished after the Second World War. Fascism’s eminent architects Marcello Piacentini and others have created a modern city here with wide streets, not forgetting the antique ideals of old with columns and white marble. EUR is largely reminiscent of a metaphysical town in a big dream landscape, much like in Giorgio de Chirico’s paintings.

As one often says – a lifetime is not long enough to really see and experience everything that Rome has to offer. The best thing is to take it easy and first and foremost try to enjoy the city. Plan to return on more visits and do not try to squeeze in hundreds of churches, museums, palaces and other antique and modern sites in only one week.
